We had a busy week last week that started out with a wonderful trip to the Cook County Courthouse in Rolling Meadows. In a trip arranged by Patton parent Don Cosley, we were able to see the Judicial Branch in action, even taking time to watch actual cases unfold in actual courtrooms. We also had time to have a question and answer with an actual judge, and a public defender. This trip was a first for the 5th grade and one we will undoubtedly take again. It provided so much more than can be learned from simply reading a textbook!
Tuesday night, the commons became a celebration of hard work, with the band students performing their first concert. Miss Horton led the band, who proudly performed for a packed house. On Friday, we were fortunate to hear the Hersey Band, who stopped by Patton on their holiday tour. Great for the kids to see and hear where good practice can lead them. Many familiar Patton faces played! This week, as well as getting ready for our chorus performance Tuesday night, we will wrap up our unit on the Constitution by learning about the Bill of Rights, and what it promises us. It’s been a fun unit and, in January, on to science! Finally, on Friday, we will be having our White Elephant gift exchange. In case the paper didn’t make it home, the idea is to find something fun and lightly used that might be enjoyed by another student (boy or girl). Wrap it without a name and send it in. We will hopefully have a full set of gifts on Friday. |
