First off, my apologies for the overdue update. With our cold days unexpectedly thrown in, things have been a bit hectic!
To do a bit of a catch up: The White Elephant to end our 2014 was a blast! Gifts of every size and shape were shared, but more importantly, smiles and laughs were the theme of the hour. Thank you to all for your help in making it successful. Along the same lines, thank you for gifts sent my way. I'm never certain if the "hard copy" thank yous make it your way, so...thank you. We have started the year with new units everywhere! In reading (and writing!), we begin our novel study of "The Liberation of Gabriel King". If you have never had an opportunity to read this wonderful story, I encourage you to do so. It provides wonderful opportunity for discussion with your fifth grader. We have also started a new science unit on "The Watery Earth". The unit has us exploring where we find water on the earth, where it goes, and how city water is handled. We have been having a weekly time we're calling "Earned Recess". Usually on Thursday morning, those who have "earned" the time through excellent student behavior, have an opportunity to take a 15 minute recess. On the other hand, those not earning the time will stay inside. Those inside will have a reflection time, and will bring the reflection home to you to be signed. We spend a lot of time focusing on behaviors appropriate for a fifth grader, and even what will be expected next year, when they move on to middle school. The Fifth Grade Team has settled on some very important end of the year dates for you to mark on your calendars: Thursday, May 28 7pm Fifth Grade Play Performance Tuesday, June 2 7pm Recognition (Graduation) Night Wednesday, June 3 Fifth Grade Chicago Celebration (Trip will be from about 7:45am - 5:15 pm) Look for further details to come!
